Heroes are tokens: a square base for martial classes, a round base for spellcasters, with the class emblem floating above and the base in the hero's colour. Click a token on the table (or in this list) to pick it up, then click a square to set it down; arrow keys and WASD step it one square. Send a hero to a door to open it, and again to lead the party through. Esc lets go. The party follows you from map to map and is remembered on this device.
Creatures stand on hexagonal bases: red for hostile, gold for neutral, green for friendly. They stay on the map you put them on, and you move them the same way as heroes. The first time you reach a map, townsfolk go about their business in towns, taverns, shops and halls, and in the wild, caves, dungeons and crypts there is a chance of meeting something hostile. Clear a map and it stays clear.
Press G or the # button to toggle the 12×12 grid; squares are named like a chess board, columns A–L west to east and rows 1–12 north to south (point at a square to see its name). Drag the table to orbit, right-drag or Shift-drag to pan, scroll to zoom. Q and E turn by a quarter; the N button resets the view.
